Writing your About page

Updated: Jan 11

The ‘About’ page. What a nuisance that thing can be. We all know our website needs one, but most of us would rather be swooped by magpies before writing about ourselves or our own business.

I love the 'About' page. It's like an open window that lets me peer into your business and get a glimpse of what to expect if I choose to open the door. Whether you’re trying to attract customers, new team members or business partners, your ‘About’ page is helping to create an impression of you, whether you like it or not.

So, what to do? Follow these tips to help turn your ‘About’ page from blah to rah.

Write in the way you’d be remembered at a party

You know, as someone with personality. Don’t feel you need to be technical to come across as professional. Adding humour, being conversational, or showing how much you care about what you do lets people know you’re human.

Write it first

Stick with me here – your ‘About’ page can set the tone for your website content. Writing it first will help you to develop the rest of your copy with the same flavour.

Be clear on what your ‘About’ page is…about

Do you want people to learn about your journey? Or what your business can offer them? IMO there’s room for both, but your message will land better if you make a decision and stick with this as the foundation for your ‘About’ page.

Keep it short(ish)

Give your audience the who, what and why of your business, but save the extra juicy info for your blog articles.

Use paragraph spaces

This may seem like a no-brainer but having a beautifully formatted ‘About’ page will help your copy appear less waffly and keep people reading. Headings, paragraph spaces and full stops are your friends.

Updating your ‘About’ page can be painless, and one of the first steps in refreshing your website content. Need more inspo? Reach out and we’ll get it sorted together.
